The memory foam mattresses have almost taken over the foam mattress market so that even though they are so expensive, they still out-sell the traditional foam mattress. Memory foam has its own disadvantages primary among them being that they are very hot. Many people who get this kind of foam mattresses do so with very little knowledge other than hearsay that they are good. Memory foam mattresses come in different densities, and although their density does not have a direct bearing on how hard or soft they are, it does make a big difference on how hot they will be. Many memory foam mattresses also give off a distinct odor, and most sales people will tell you that this is because it is new and that the smell will go off within a couple of days. Well don't believe them. Some makes will keep stinking months after you have bought them and the stink will be so bad that you cannot even sleep in the same room far less on the mattress.

The better makes will not give you these problems and also make sure that they do not use PBDE, a fire retardant that is used in the manufacture of memory foam, but which is a health hazard. Unfortunately these mattresses will also be very expensive and you will have to pay through your nose for a really good quality one.
