7 Good Reasons to Take First Aid Training

1. Although death rates from heart disease are falling in the UK, over 300,000 people each year suffer a heart attack. Learning basic CPR could mean the difference between life and death for one of your family or friends.

2. In the UK over 150,000 people a year suffer a stroke. Basic first aid skills mean that you could recognise the symptoms of a stroke and get help fast. The sooner help arrives the less damage is done to the stroke victim.

3. A child is more likely to suffer a choking accident in their own home than anywhere else. Fast action from a trained first aider can easily save a life or prevent damage cause by oxygen deprivation.

4. Burns and scalds from hot water account for a large percentage of accidents in the home, particularly in young children. Although prevention is much better than cure in this case knowing how to treat a burn or scaled quickly can reduce the extent of the injury and even prevent death.

5. More than 28,000 kids in the UK are treated for poisoning, or possible poisoning, every year. Fast action and appropriate knowledge can mean that an accidental poisoning is dealt with properly from the outset, limiting or preventing avoidable further injury or illness.

6. Accidents involving broken glass can result in serious life threatening cuts. Stopping blood loss quickly and effectively can easily save someone's life.

7. Drowning can occur in even a very small amount of water. Resuscitation is possible and most effective if carried out as soon as possible. Understanding the serious nature of near drowning can also prevent death from secondary drowning where a victim goes untreated.

The message is simple, learn basic first aid, you might just save a life...
