What are the symptoms of a stroke? Stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) this occurs when blood supply to the part of the brain is disrupted or there is no enough blood flow in the brain which causing brain cells to die. When it happen the oxygen and glucose cannot be delivered to the brain. And we can compromise the blood flow by variety of reasons. And what causes CVA?
Blockage of an artery includes:
- narrowing of the small arteries within the brain
- hardening of the arteries leading to the brain
- Embolism to the brain from the heart
- rupture of an artery (hemorrhage)
There are different causes of stroke the first one is blockage of an artery in the brain by a clot which is the most common cause of stroke. Embolic stroke is a type of stoke that ca occur when a blood clot of therosclerotic plaque breaks loose, and then travels through open arteries, and lodges in an artery of the brain. Cerebral hemorrhage occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds into the surroundings tissue of the brain, it can cause stroke because of depriving blood and oxygen to the parts of the brain. There are also symptoms of stroke, when brain cells are deprived of oxygen; they cease to perform their usual task. The symptoms f stokes depend on the area of the brain that has been affected and also the amount of brain tissue that has been damage.
Small strokes may not cause any symptoms of a stroke, but can still damage brain tissue. Those strokes are called silent strokes. Here are some of the signs and symptoms of a stroke:
1. Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body. The loss of voluntary movement and/or sensation may be complete or partial. There may also be an associated tingling sensation in the affected area.
2. Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding. Sometimes weakness in the muscle of the face can cause drooling.
3. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
4. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
5. Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
If any of the signs of a stroke mentioned above suddenly appear, emergency medical response should be sought. The affected person should lie flat to promote an optimal blood flow to the brain. If drowsiness, unresponsive or nausea is present, the person should be placed in the rescue position on their side to prevent choking should vomiting occur. We need to be careful in anything we do and anything we eat, because those things may affect your entire life and it can lead to death if untreated. Always consult your doctor for general check up to detect if ever you are at risk in developing any diseases. Knowledge about our health is very important knowing what is a stroke and what are the symptoms of a stroke are a must to avoid further damage and ultimately prevent death.
