The Topaz Gemstone is commonly a yellow gemstone but ranges in color from pale yellow to brown. It has been popular for jewelry since the 16th century. Pink topaz is quite rare and highly prized, especially the deeper hues. Red and pink topaz gems were used in the jewelry of the 18th and 19th Century Russian Czarinas and is why topaz is sometimes called "Imperial Topaz".

The mineral hardness scale was established by the German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs in the early 1800's. He based the scale on ten common minerals ranging from talc, the softest mineral on the scale, to diamond, the hardest. Each mineral on the scale will scratch the mineral below it and will be scratched by the mineral above it.
The topaz gemstone has a hardness of 8, which makes it quite suitable for use as the stones in topaz gemstone earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and even in topaz gemstone rings.
